Engaging our community with compassion, for justice and transformation

A founding principle of the Episcopal Church of the Advocate is our commitment to giving a minimum of 10% of our income – from pledges and cash received at the Offertory each Sunday – to individuals and organizations in the community. In other words, for every $10 received, $1 will be given to those in need and those working for peace and justice in the world. We call this The Advocate Tithe.  Everyone participates, both through their donations and in determining who receives the funds. Advocates are encouraged to apply for funding for organizations with whom they are involved.

How to apply

Anyone in the congregation may apply on behalf of an organization or individual they support. Applications will be evaluated by:

  • How closely they match the Advocate’s Core Values (Compassion, Justice, and Transformation) as well as the priorities for giving and involvement identified  by the Vestry and the congregation.
  • Directly involvement, or opportunities for involvement, by members of the congregation.
  • Service to the marginalized and disenfranchised.
  • Accountability and sustainability, and willingness to share outcomes with the congregation.

The Advocate Vestry authorizes the funds to be distributed, and the community gathers at the Distribution Meeting to consider applications and reach consensus on distribution. The final distribution is also approved by the Vestry. Approximately 10% of the Tithe is designated for the Rector’s Discretionary Fund.
